Review: Hoover SteamJet Dual Head Steam Mop Posted: 22 Dec 2013 11:25 PM PST We were recently sent the Hoover’s latest in steam cleaning products, the SteamJet Dual Head Steam Mop SSN1700. We’ve been using it for a few weeks now so its about time for us to do a quick review and share our thoughts on what its like to use. What is it? For those who have always just used conventional floor mops and are unfamiliar with electric steam cleaners, the Hoover SteamJet Dual Head Steam Mop is a powerful home steam cleaner for carpets, stone, wooden and vinyl floor tiles (not suitable for floors treated with varnish). Hoover claims it will kill 99.9% of common bacteria without having to use a single drop of cleaning chemical or detergent, all it needs is water and a power socket to get started. What its not… Despite the brand’s well established reputation, potential buyers should be aware that the SteamJet Dual Head Steam Mop does not include any vacuuming or hoovering function. It is designed purely just for steam cleaning in mind. Hence our advice is, if you plan on buying one for cleaning your home flooring, make sure each time before you start, you should hoover well first, as you would with a normal mop. Our experience with the steam mop has taught us if you don’t, all the dust, dog hair, etc, that was on the floor will end up all sticky, wet and soggy after treatment with the steamer, a rather messy situation no one wants to be in. What’s included in the box? Quite alot in fact. The Hoover SteamJet comes with two deluxe washable micro fibre pads, a removable twin head for use depending on your preferred method of cleaning (gliding or a little more scrubbing with stubborn grimes), a 7m long power cord and finally a 0.7L capacity water tank. What are the special features? The SteamJet boasts super fast startup, which means as soon as you fill it up with water and switch it on, there is only a 30-second delay before you can start steam cleaning. This is indicated by its green LED lighting. There are also other convenient neat features like, trigger switch underneath the handle for steaming on demand rather than constant steaming even when you’re not cleaning. What we liked? We found the SteamJet to be really helpful when we needed to remove some old stubborn paint marks which had been left on our floor for a good few months despite using a number of potent cleaning products. The fact that you don’t need to use any cleaning liquid / detergent or chemical is another plus for those with children or pets at home, and its better for the environment. The 7m long power cord is fantastic and should be able to prevent most from having to continuously plug and unplug to clean different parts of the home. The 30-second quick startup really does work and is very reliable. Unlike some steam cleaners we’ve used in the past, there is no water leak from the SteamJet whatsoever, we didn’t need to be concerned of hot water spilling out onto our feet as we ‘hoovered’. Lastly, the SteamJet has been built to provide maximal convenience when cleaning, it can be laid completely flat so that you can manoeuvre your way underneath tight furniture spaces. What we didn’t like? We found the SteamJet to be a little on the heavy side. Hoover has already slimmed it down to 3.2kg however we still found this a little too much especially after hoovering for 15-20 minutes, the weight also did not help when hauling it up the stairs. As we mentioned above, the SteamJet is really a mop and not a hoover, though Hoover have included two removable and washable micro fibre pads which theoretically should help pick up any dust and dirt you may have on your floor before steam cleaning, it is still in reality not very effective for this purpose. Conclusion Overall, we enjoyed using the Hoover SteamJet steam cleaner, it definitely has helped us remove some stubborn grime and dirt off our floor which we otherwise would not have been able to with conventional cleaning products and certainly not possible with a normal mop. As highlighted above, it too has a few weaknesses, in addition, one must acknowledge that it is not a kitchen or toilet steam cleaner (or the so called all in one steam cleaner), it has been specifically designed for floor cleaning in mind. We felt the SteamJet Dual Head Steam Mop is reasonably pricetagged at £89.99 and offers good value for your money, it should serve as a nice addition to the ever-growing number of electrical cleaning appliances we are seeing in every household. We had no concerns over its reliability and certainly don’t expect to in the near future. What’s next? We’ve been told to expect to see a brand new robot vacuum cleaner from Hoover in 2014, yes, a fully automated robotic vacuum, we can’t wait to try it out when its released. So stay tuned and we’ll have all the updates as soon as we hear about it! |
