Vivo is working on a new high-end smartphone

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 07:09 AM PDT

Last year we wrote about Vivo Xplay 3S smartphone, which was the first Android smartphone with QHD display. Vivo is now working on a new device, so let's have a closer look at it.

Vivo has teased its new flagship device, and as far as we know, the new device will have 3GB of RAM, just like its predecessor, but it will use Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974-AC chipset. Also, there are hints that we'll see an improved camera, and there are words about ultimate HiFi experience, so there could be an upgrade in phone's audio quality. As for the display, we don't know what kind of display will this device use, but we assume that it will be the same QHD display that was found on the previous model.

As you can see, not much information is available about this model, in fact, we don't have a name of the device at the current time, so we'll just have to wait for more information.

Eco-friendly initiatives for your business

Posted: 27 Nov 2014 01:47 AM PST

Being eco-friendly in business is more than just wanting to be environmentally friendly. There are financial benefits as well. As utility bills go on rising, going green makes business sense. Every organisation can blend sustainability with commercial development. Here are some top tips on how companies can reduce costs and cut carbon.

Look at your lighting

Top of the list for eco initiatives should be taking a look at your lighting as part of a full energy audit. LED panels, tubes and lamps can together deliver energy savings of up to 85 per cent and cut carbon emissions at the same time.

When you buy an LED light,  it's wise to choose a quality product that will last for ten years or more.

Consider replacing taps and showers

Green tip number two is to replace taps and showers to reduce water use. Quality eco taps and shower heads are worth the investment as they cut water consumption by more than half. They do this by blending air with water flow. You can get a similar result by buying tap aerators if you want to keep your current taps.

Knowing what you can save with each eco product you choose is a big bonus and there are handy online calculators that can show you how much carbon you save, as well as the annual financial
savings.

More energy saving tips

While they're not the most exciting parts of a business, all companies will have a range of pumps installed at their premises. A Variable Speed Drive fitted to each one can cut energy use by around 50 per cent, shrinking your carbon footprint and cutting bills.

As an eco commitment, it's always better to buy refurbished or used technology like laptops and PCs. While this might not be an option for larger organisations, smaller companies should reap the green rewards.

Among the most eco-friendly laptops currently available are those by Dell, HP, Apple and Acer. These manufacturers score highly across a range of measures advocated by the Ethical Consumer organisation.

If you need to purchase new desktop PCs, then VeryPC's Broadleaf range is a highly recommended green winner. Very efficient monitors for desktops include the Dell G2210 and the Lenovo Thinkvision L2251x.

Top eco choices in the scanner department are from Epson and Richoh, while planet-friendly printers include the new L355 and L555 models from Epson. These devices score highly because they feature refillable tanks rather than ink cartridges, which cuts waste and costs.

Companies can add to the green benefits by choosing multi-functional devices that print, scan and copy, with a full duplex operation to print on both sides of the paper.

For smaller businesses, the EcoButton is worth considering too. These devices slot into a USB port and rapidly suspend power on laptops or desktops with a single tap. There's also a SaveStandbyMouse that performs a similar function.

Get your staff on board with handy apps

While most mobile energy apps are geared towards the home user, they can be adapted for the business setting as a way to raise staff awareness of the need for sustainability in an engaging way. They include the Standby Energy Cost Calculator for Android and the Drip Detective for iPhones.

For a bit of fun and to galvanise staff into thinking about being green, the JouleBug app for iPhones is another good download choice. It groups tips on saving energy into achievements. Participants can rise up the leaderboards and win virtual cups with this competition.

T-Band Smart Strap: Concept in the making makes any watch smarter

Posted: 26 Nov 2014 02:26 AM PST

Whilst the T-Band Smart Strap is currently still a gadget concept in the making, it sure is a fantastic one, the latest idea is that it lets you transform your favourite watch into a smartwatch with the simple addition of a new strap which is equipped with a hidden display and is available as either T-BAND OD with PMOLED display or T-Band HD (Hidden Display).

The T-Band Smart Strap project is currently up for funding on Indiegogo looking to raise $50,000, with pledges starting from $129. As of today, it has reached 25% of its target with 36 days remaining.

The design itself is non-intrusive for those who are style and design conscious, best of all, it leaves your existing watch alone, not interfering with your analog watch’s functionality but adds to it, giving it a futuristic upgrade. Take a look at the video below.

T-BAND HD (Hidden Display) model is designed for people who want all of the smart watch functions while being super discreet. LED panels are embedded below a thin "membrane" like material which hides the display. When it's turned off (default mode), the T-band HD actually looks like the ND model (rubber band). When there is a push notification or alert, the hidden LED panel lights up and display the necessary information.

Battery life is same as the OD model (200mAH) which is expected to last 2-3 days on a full charge. The HD model however has one downside- it can only display English alphanumeric text and numbers. Non-alphabet characters (such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean Arabic, Russia, etc.) will not be displayed. Images and videos are also not able to be displayed through this model.

The unit is powered by ARM® Cortex-M4 processor with Dual mode Bluetooth Classic and BLE. This setup allows the T-band to be compatible with a wide range of smartphone models (from old to new). The OD model is also equipped with an on board Mic for Speech to Text capabilities (requires 3rd party app support).

The app that can help you beat the betting exchange

Posted: 26 Nov 2014 02:24 AM PST

The world of exchange betting is one of the most frantic environments in the gambling world and to stay on top of the action you either need a computer processor in your brain or some software to help you. Fortunately, Betfair has a range of products to help its punters, including an exchange betting app called BetTrader. Designed to find, collate and display the latest odds in a fraction of a second, this app has been described as a “must-have” tool for traders of all persuasions.

Before we take a look at some of BetTrader’s finer features, let’s quickly outline what exchange betting is and how a trader aims to make a profit in the market. A betting exchange is one that gives punters the chance to both back and lay on a proposition. To back a side you basically take the odds offered by a bookmaker and hope the team/ individual wins. In contrast, if someone doesn’t believe a team/ individual is going to win they can lay odds against them.

A Trader’s Mission

Someone who plays the sports betting exchange is known as a trader and their mission is simple: to make a profit by scanning the market and finding the best odds on either side of the divide. Essentially, a trader will back and lay various propositions and, generally, try to make their profits by laying.

Much of a trader’s time is spent in the in-play market; however, keeping up with all the market shifts can be tough. This is where a betting exchange app such as BetTrader comes into play.

By utilising Betfair’s API (basically a platform that allows third-party software providers to plug into the mainframe), BetTrader is able to deliver up to 20 refreshes every second. This means the app can provide the most accurate live data directly to the user. Not only that but it allows them to store the data and display it in a way that’s easy to read.

Exchange betting can be a fantastic way to make money if you have an appreciation of odds and a deep knowledge of a particular sport. However, all this is somewhat useless if you can’t react quick enough to beat the market. Thankfully, an exchange betting app such as BetTrader can act as a remedy for this problem and while it might not guarantee you a profit, it will certainly get you a lot closer to your financial goal than if you didn’t have it.
