New 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S – gallery and video

Posted: 05 May 2013 02:26 AM PDT

Porsche has revealed the images and specs of their upcoming 2014 911 Turbo and Turbo S, the new car is capable of 0-62mph in a searing 3.1 seconds. The Turbo will have on offer 520 bhp while the Turbo S will offer 40 more bhp. Both versions will have a 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six, mounted at the back of the car in traditional 911 fashion. Unfortunately, there will be no manual gearbox option, with Porsche electing to offer only the seven-speed PDK paddleshift automatic.

If you’re a 911 fan, you’ll have little trouble recognising the new styling cues, especially that rear end which now looks more bold, aggressive and muscular than ever. Porsche says the rear arches are 26mm wider even than the 'wide arch' Carrera 4 model: it's more pumped than any 911 Turbo to date.

Porsche has given the new 911 nothing short of latest technology, the 2014 Porsche 911 is also now fitted with active aerodynamics for the first time. This tech comprises a three-stage retractable front spoiler and a three-position deployable rear spoiler. If the driver selects performance mode, the front spoiler will fully extended and the rear wing raises to its maximum height.

The 911 Turbo S also gets Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) adaptive suspension as standard for the first time, along with powerful Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) and a Sport Chrono Package Plus with dynamic engine mounts, which help make the 911′s structure stiffer so the suspension can work even more effectively.

Though the 911 will continue to have all wheel drive, the new 2014 911 will have a completely new system known as 'PTM' four-wheel drive. It now features an electronically controlled and activated multiplate clutch, which together with a brand new water cooling function means even more torque can be directed to the front wheels. This means even more power can be used even more of the time. The regular Turbo offers 486lb ft of torque from 1,950rpm all the way to 5,000rpm, with an overboost function available 2,100-4,250rpm that peaks at 523lb ft. The Turbo S has 516lb ft as standard, 2,100-4,250rpm, with a ridiculous 553lb ft overboost available 2,200-4,000rpm.

The 2014 911′s tech doesn’t just mean it’ll go faster, it’ll also be more eco-friendly which isn’t always something drivers’ of this type of vehicle would appreciate. The 911 Turbo has stop-start that now activates as you're pulling to a stop rather than waiting until the Porsche is no longer moving. It also has a 'coasting' function that disengages the drivetrain altogether at a cruise, a bit like dipping a clutch. As a result, this remarkable supercar very nearly achieves 30mpg on the official EU fuel economy testing cycle; both models claiming 29.1mph with 227g/km CO2 emissions. Incredible, given the 560hp potential.

The new 911 Turbo goes on UK sale this September with prices starting at £118,349. The new 911 Turbo S costs from £140,852, and will be available at the same time. Standard kit includes 20-inch alloys, DAB digital radio and leather; the S builds on this with full LED headlights and unique trim options as well.
