All you need to know about playing the PS3 DualShock Controller on Sony Xperia

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 10:22 AM PDT

With advancements in smartphone technology, and a wider range of app titles, more and more people are finding that mobile is offering them an improved gaming experience.

As mobile content continues to outsell traditional handheld consoles and established online sites, such as FullTiltPoker.com start to create dedicated mobile games, it seems clear that the mobile platform is challenging more traditional methods of gaming. It therefore comes as no surprise that the world of console gaming and the mobile platform are starting to merge.

PlayStation creators and producer of innovative mobile models, Sony announced back in April of this year that Xperia smartphone and tablets would be compatible with the wireless DualShock 3 controller. The support of the PS3 controller helps to make the mobile gaming experience more familiar to serious gamers and allows a greater range of controls.

The native DualShock 3 controller support is currently available on a number of Xperia devices, including the Sony Xperia Z, the Sony Xperia ZL, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and the Sony Xperia SP. New and upcoming models, such as the Xperia Z1 are also likely to be support the PS3 controller without requiring any rooting.

A huge selection of Android titles are available to download from the Google Play store. You can also access games directly from the PlayStation Store Mobile (PSM). Unfortunately, not all of the Android games will be compatible with the DualShock 3 controller, but the games description will help you to easily identify which products have 'Controller Support'.

Some of the graphically impressive and high-quality games available to play from the Xperia, with use of the controller include Dead Trigger. This first person shooter is available for free on Google Play, and sees you blasting through hoards of zombies in a Call of Duty BlackOps Zombie mode style.

Familiar titles, such as GTA: III Vice City also makes use of the controller, with the menus and controls working flawlessly.  This title is £2.99 from Google Play and offers excellent graphics and smooth gameplay.

If you want something a little more retro, then you should pick up Sonic the Hedgehog 4 episode II for just £3.94. The classic speedy platform comes to life on mobile and is fully optimised for the DualShock controller, allowing you to race through each level seamlessly.
